    Adhesive Capsulitis

When your shoulder stopped going where you tell it.

Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is a thickening and tightening of the capsule that surrounds the shoulder joint. Motion disappears gradually, and the pain is often worst at night.

Most people are told to wait it out. It can take well over a year on its own, and you rarely get all of the motion back. Physical therapy treatment for frozen shoulder shortens that curve, and the shoulder is the specialty our Doctors of Physical Therapy have built their practice around. We test what your shoulder can actually do, treat the capsule directly, and re-measure so you can see the range coming back rather than guessing.

If your stiffness started after an operation, our post-surgical shoulder rehab covers that path, and general orthopedic physical therapy handles the shoulder and elbow injuries that lead there.

    What We Treat

Stiff, painful shoulders of every origin.

    • Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder), primary and post-injury
    • Frozen shoulder after a period of immobilization or a sling
    • Stiffness following shoulder surgery, including capsular release
    • Shoulder impingement and rotator cuff irritation with lost motion
    • Chronic shoulder pain that hasn't responded to rest or injections
    • Sprains and strains that left the shoulder guarded and tight
    • Lifters and overhead athletes with painful, blocked overhead range
    • Pre-surgical shoulder therapy to preserve motion before a procedure
    How We Treat It

Hands-on work, then strength to keep it.

    • Joint mobilization and manual stretching at the capsule's true end range
    • Graded, progressive range-of-motion exercises you can repeat at home
    • Rotator cuff and scapular strengthening once motion starts returning
    • Soft tissue work for the compensating neck, upper back, and biceps
    • Pain-modulating strategies so you can sleep and keep moving
    • Retesting on the Humero Tech C1® so progress is a number, not a feeling

Every visit is a full hour, one-on-one with the same Doctor of Physical Therapy. See what your first visit looks like or how our cash pay model works.

    Measured progress, not a guess.

A stiff shoulder feels the same on a good week and a bad one, which is why so many people quit therapy early. The Humero Tech C1®, built here in Salt Lake City, measures your strength through the full arc of motion in every direction and compares it to your other arm. We use those numbers to decide how hard to push the capsule this week and to show you, in plain figures, what changed since last month.

    • Objective shoulder testing at the start, so you have a real baseline
    • Finds the directions that are blocked and weak, not just the ones that hurt
    • Dose your stretching and loading to what the capsule tolerates today
    • Retesting that tells you when it's working, and when the plan should change

More on the data behind it in our shoulder testing and analysis.

    Where You Are Matters

The three stages, and what each one needs.

The same stretch that helps one stage can flare another. Your evaluation starts by pinning down where your shoulder actually is.

    Freezing stage

Pain climbs, often worst at night, and the shoulder quietly loses motion. This is the window where the right hands-on work and gentle, well-dosed movement keep you from losing range you'll spend months earning back.

    Frozen stage

Pain settles a little, but the shoulder is genuinely stiff. Reaching a seatbelt, a back pocket, or an overhead shelf becomes the daily reminder. Treatment shifts toward sustained stretch, joint mobilization, and loading at end range.

    Thawing stage

Motion returns, and the arm is usually much weaker than it feels. This is where measured strength work matters most, so you don't trade stiffness for an unstable, easily irritated shoulder.

    Timing Matters

Every month you wait, the capsule tightens.

Frozen shoulder rewards early attention more than almost any shoulder problem we see. Motion lost in the first few months is far easier to recover than motion lost over a year, and the strength that drains out of a shoulder you've stopped using takes longer still to rebuild.

Protect the range you still have and calm the night pain.

    Motion returning

Rebuild rotator cuff strength so the shoulder holds its new range.
